Short break in Buenos Aires & Colônia

What do you do when you need a short break from the grey city of São Paulo?

You go to Buenos Aires, favorite city in this part of the world (e.g. for Roel and Chantal).

Eating medialunas, drinking the best Argentinean wine, shopping like crazy (Roel) and just enjoying being in a European style city with a Latin touch.

We shopped in the Calle Florida, had lunch on Thom's favorite terrace, dinner at Las Lilas in the beautiful Puerto Madero (on our wedding anniversary), shopped till we dropped in Galerias Pacífico and Patio Bullrich, strolled around the flee market of San Telmo, saw a tango show, met some friends and made a trip to Colônia, Uruguay (an extra stamp in our passport!), a small city which is on the UNESCO world heritage list.

4 Days away and we charged up our batteries for the last days of 2008!

Wat doe je als je de behoefte hebt om het grijze São Paulo even te ontvluchten?

Dan ga je naar Buenos Aires, favoriete stad in dit werelddeel (voor Roel en Chantal dan).

Medialunas eten, de beste Argentijnse wijn drinken, kopen als een gek (Roel) en gewoonweg genieten van een stad met Europese allure maar wel met een Latin touch.

We hebben gewinkeld in de Calle Florida, geluncht op Thom's favoriete terras (de tosti's zijn er zo lekker!), gedineerd bij Las Lilas (op onze trouwdag!) in het mooie Puerto Madero, shopped till we dropped in de Galerias Pacífico en Patio Bullrich, lekker rondgeslenterd over de vlooienmarkt in San Telmo, hebben een tango show gezien, vrienden ontmoet en een we maakten een korte trip naar Colônia, Uruguay (extra stempel in ons paspoort!), een klein stadje welk op de werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO staat.

4 Dagen weg en de batterij is weer opgeladen voor de laatste dagen van 2008!

Christmas time already?

When you go through the city of São Paulo at this time of the year, it's Christmas all over! Trees, lights, music, it starts already right after Halloween.

It seems that the shopping malls have a competition: which one has the biggest tree(s), the most lights and the most original scene with Santa Claus?

And even with all these Christmas decorations, it is difficult to get into the spirit. Still after 5 years, Christmas in summer seems odd!

So this year we decided to decorate our Christmas tree a little tropical...

We used the 'bomfim' (good luck) straps from Bahia and see what the result is:

Als je door de stad São Paulo rijdt in deze tijd van het jaar, dan is het kerst wat de klok slaat! Kerstbomen, kerstverlichting, kerstmuziek, het begint al meteen na Halloween.

Het lijkt ook alsof de grote winkelcentra een wedstrijdje doen: wie heeft de grootste boom (bomen), de meeste lampjes en het meest originele decor voor de Kerstman?

En zelfs met al deze kerstdecoratie is het moeilijk om in de kerststemming te raken. Zelfs na 5 jaar blijft kerst in de zomer een vreemd iets!

En dus hebben we besloten om onze kerstboom dit jaar tropisch te versieren.

We hebben de geluksbandjes uit Bahia gebruikt en zie hier het resultaat:

Mercado Municipal

Oh oh, the Mercado Municipal in the centre of town... it's just one of our favorite spots of the city.
The fruit so nicely put out, lovely delicacies all over, almost impossible not to buy something.

The best coffee and the best sandwich Mortadela in town.

A Sunday at the beach

It had been ages ago since we'd been to the beach of the Litoral Norte. This is the coast between Rio de Janeiro and Santos. This beach is the most beautiful one from Brazil (with almost 8000 km of beach in total). Although the pictures that follow could have been made on any beach... We went there with two other families and had a great time. The kids played in the sea the whole day and were very hungry:

Het leek eeuwen geleden dat we voor de laatste keer op het strand van de Litoral Norte waren. Dit is de kustlijn tussen Rio de Janeiro en Santos. Deze kust vinden we toch echt de allermooiste van Brazilië (met in totaal bijna 8000 km kustlijn). Hoewel de foto's hieronder eigenlijk op ieder willekeurig strand genomen zouden kunnen zijn... We waren er met 3 families en hadden een heerlijke dag. De kinderen hebben de hele dag in zee gespeeld en hadden daarna natuurlijk een hónger:

Shopping at 25o de Março

Today was shopping day at the 25o de Março, thé shopping area in the center of São Paulo. No, this time not for ourselves. Had to go for 57 pairs of jeans for the orphanage (Recanto São Francisco) that will receive Christmas presents from all the donations we received!

Vandaag stond in het teken van winkelen op de 25o de Março, hét winkelgebied in het centrum van São Paulo. Nee dit keer niet voor onszelf, maar voor 57 spijkerbroeken voor de kinderen van het weeshuis (Recanto São Francisco) die we ook met kerstcadeaus verrassen, geld bij elkaar verzameld met de kerstactie 2008!

Chantal in CARAS

Yes, Chantal made it too into the CARAS (compare with Privé, Story, Hello, Hola, Paris Match, etc., a gossip magazine about all the famous or wannabee famous in Brazil...), even on the same page as world famous soccer player Ronaldo!

The Chapel Art Show 2008 was the reason (16-22 October 2008). An Art Show where 130 Brazilian artists have shown their works. 166 Pieces of art have been sold in these 7 days, for a total value of about 275,000 reais (around 100,000 dolar). 25 % of this amount will go to the charities that the school's NOG supports.

Paint a Future (http://www.paintafuture.org/), a project set up by a Dutch artist Hetty van der Linden, was the honoured project during this years show. 5 Pieces of work have been sold, with a total value of 35,000 reais of which 100% goes directly to the children in need. For more information on Paint a Future, please have a look at the website, it's an amazing (and well-functioning) project!

Ja hoor, Chantal heeft het ook tot in de CARAS gehaald (vergelijk het met de Story, Privé, Hello, Hola, Paris Match, een roddelblad over de beroemde en wannabees in Brazilië). En zelfs op dezelfde pagina als de wereldberoemde voetballer Ronaldo!

De Chapel Art Shwo 2008 was de reden (16-22 oktober 2008). Een Art Show waar 130 Braziliaanse artiesten hun werk toonden. 166 Kunstwerken werden verkocht in deze 7 dagen, met een totale waarde van ca. 275.000 reais (rond de 100.000 dollar). 25% van dit bedrag gaan naar de liefdadigheidsprojecten die de school steunt.

Paint a Future (http://www.paintafuture.org/), een project opgezet door de Nederlandse artieste Hetty van de Linden, was het project dat dit keer in de volle belangstelling stond. 5 Werken werden verkocht met een totaalwaarde van 35.000 reais waarvan de volle 100% naar de betreffende kinderen in nood gaat. voor meer info over Paint a Future, kijk even op de website. Het is een fantastisch (en goed georganiseerd!) project.

Thom's match

Today, Thom had his second match in the 'Federação Tenis Paulista'.
The first one, a month ago, he ,unfortunately, lost (6-2, 6-2).
Today however, it went better: still lost the match but this time much closer (6-3, 4-6, 10-8 in the super tie break).



And as if this tennis match was not enough for today yet, we decided to play a double... Thom and his German friend Ferdinand against Roel and Chantal. And Roel and Chantal really had to work hard to win (6-1, 7-6 , 8-6 in the tiebreak). Within a couple of months, the boys will take over, for sure!

Vandaag had Thom zijn 2e wedstrijd in de 'Federação Tenis Paulista'.
Z'n eerste wedstrijd, een maand geleden, verloor hij helaas (6-2, 6-2).
Vandaag ging het stukken beter, nog steeds niet gewonnen, maar het scheelde niet veel (6-3, 4-6, 10-8 in de super tie break).



En, alsof het nog niet genoeg tennis voor vandaag was, besloten we een dubbel te spelen. Thom en zijn duits vriendje Ferdinand tegen Roel en Chantal. Nou, Roel en Chantal konden maar nét winnen, ze moesten er hard voor werken (6-1, 7-6, 8-6 in de tiebreak). Nog een paar maanden en de jongens zullen het overnemen, dat is zeker!

New - Nieuw

It has been ages since we last updated our website. Sorry for that, but all the information we had about the website etc. has been lost!

Therefor, we decided to start a new site, a weblog, to (try to) keep you updated about our life (still) in Brazil!

Wat is de laatste update van onze website lang geleden. Onze excuses, maar helaas zijn we alle informatie omtrent onze website kwijt.

Vandaar dat we besloten hebben om een nieuwe site, een weblog, te starten, om jullie up-to-date (proberen) te houden wat betreft ons leven (nog steeds) in Brazilië.

We hopen dat jullie het leuk vinden, dat jullie hier vaak terugkomen en we zouden het erg leuk vinden als jullie een berichtje achterlaten!
